Very reliable when serviced properly. The key is regular fluid changes every 40,000 km—VW claims "lifetime fill" but that doesn't hold up in Dubai's heat. Skipping service leads to jerky shifts and eventual mechatronic failure. With proper care, DSG gearboxes easily last 200,000+ km.
On TSI engines (especially 1.8 and 2.0 from 2008-2013), this is often the timing chain tensioner—a serious issue that can destroy the engine if ignored. On newer cars, it might be something simpler like a loose heat shield. Either way, get it checked promptly.
