They're BMW underneath, so costs are similar. Independent specialists like us charge significantly less than the dealer. The main expense is if timing chain work is needed on older N14/N18 engines.
The current generation is quite reliable. Earlier models with the N14 engine had timing chain issues. The BMW-sourced B38/B48 engines in newer models are much more robust.
Some consumption is normal on turbocharged engines, but excessive use indicates problems. The N14/N18 engines can develop piston ring issues. We'll diagnose the cause and advise on options.
The Cooper S is plenty quick for most people and easier on consumables. JCW models are brilliant fun but use brakes and tyres faster. Both are equally reliable—it's about how you want to drive.
